Serious RL topics usually touch on two topics that will generally incite the community and start flame fests, politics and religion, which are definitely against the RoC.  If you truely wish to discuss such topics i would suggest signing up for some politicially  non-biased blogs, if such a thing exists, and seek to enlighten others of like mind there.  There is no reason to create a new forum for social interactions.  That forum already exists, and nothing defines "Non Gameplay" than the general atmosphere of the NGD.  The people who really dislike such an open and whimsical atmosphere are usually those that bring their anger, angst and venom about whatever issue is currently got them in a twist and the response they get isnt the one they were looking for.  So their frustration is then directed at the people who refused to validate their viewpoint.  Those people are the ones who usually get the lable of "Troll" and "Flamemonger" cause while they thing their posts are some piece of literary gold it is usually just somone wanting to kick sand in other peoples face just to see how they will react to them.  We have no responibility to babysit such people.

We also don't miss them when they leave....  well coyote might but thats cause whiners are such a rich source of humor.

Why do things that are serious automatically mean RL things. I mean, HELLO, Class vs. Skill-based MMORPGs was struck down near instantly and de-railed, then it was mocked after it was posted again. So, that is the problem. Actually, what defines Non-Gameplay is, well, Non-gameplay. If it's not about EQ2, it's obviously Non-Gameplay! So, why does RL topics have to do with anything?

Honestly, I am all for an open forum, however well, NGD just isn't "open," it's "closed." You may think it's open, but that's because you are on the inside. There is very little room for people to try to push things towards gaming or anything non-"social" without a de-rail. Are there other "closed" forums on the boards that are based around a specific-type of people? No, that's what's wrong with the NGD.

You know I am truly amazed at the seeming cliquishness of some of the NGD posters responding to this thread. Appropriate NGD forum material is defined by SOE, not anyone who posts there, and the rules clearly state it is for anything non-game related. As had been said many other times in many other forums on these boards.... "If you don't like it, dont read it, and don't respond to it."

I can think of a dozen "serious" topics that are neither political or religious.

  • How about a discussion between the players who also surf, about the best waves they've ever ridden?
  • Stories of the worst car accident someone has witnessed or been in (I admit, I'd be fascinated by this topic! but i'm kinda sick...)
  • Valentines Day Special: Best/Worst date stories
  • What you would like to see in an MMO (this could get ugly but would also be very interesting if everyone involved just posts their ideas and doesn't flame others)
  • SPORTS! How about them Chargers on Monday!? Great game!

See what I mean? I don't want a board that is dreary and unfun. I just want a place that everyone feels welcome, not just those who are particularly good at discussing weird stuff, or particularly good at finding off the wall links or pictures that they share with others. Or those particularly good at derailing any topic posted into a discussion on food. I can see how some of those topics I listed above would die in a day or two due to lack of interest by the NGD regulars, and those that aren't regular wouldn't even see it as the "Newest Thread" preview on the forum home, because it would be replaced by another topic in a matter of minutes, as is the norm.

Please lets not let this degrade to personal arguing and attacks. Everyone is entitled to their opinions of other members, and I respect that, but I would rather that doesn't make its way to this thread, because I'd like to see a discussion about the merits of NGD, whether it should remain as it is (and possibly the rules posted in it changed to reflect the actual nature) or if there should be a new forum created where people can be as silly as they want, can derail as much as they want, and post about sporks all they want, while leaving NGD to discussions about RL, other games or other non-gaming discussions without fear of it getting derailed.

Leawyn, while I agree with the first part of your statement, the latter half I have to disagree with. I've been posting mainly in the NGD but also in the SK boards from time to time for the better part of a year (more NGD than not). In that time, I've seen several serious topic threads go for awhile until it seems the topic has been talked out or the same answers start reappearing over and over again. The NGD is without a doubt a very laid back place to be. It's why I like it so much. The discussions can be serious but usually will never get TOO serious without a bit of humor dropped in, which is how I also tend to handle my real life discussions as well. Normally things are not meant as a derail (but I won't deny that some are), but as a way to keep some humor in a situation that may be tense, or just to get a laugh out of the OP and others. The "Do you speak Icelandic" thread is a perfect example of this. If you check Savanja's posting history, you will find several instances of help and good advice and serious points in a discussion, but you'll also find where she has interjected humor in several places. The same goes with Coyote, although he likes to keep things humorous so most of his advice is laced with large amounts of humor, but his opinion is never purposely vicious or intentionally harmful, unless attacked.

The Red Names have been quoted in the past as saying that the NGD is to be modded with a bit more leniency due to the nature of the NGD. This is coming from the Red Names themselves, not the mods. The nature of the NGD is to be laid back, fun , and allow for a fostering of a community that is more like hanging out with your friends than a serious forum for discussion. It's what makes it a fun place to be. As such, topics will be derailed (just like in RL hanging out with your friends), and jokes will be played ( just like in RL hanging out with your friends) and silly nonsensical garbage will be let loose for the expense of a laugh or just to stay in touch ( as with RL friends hanging out). But also, ( as with RL friends) serious discussion CAN be had as long as you don't walk in the door with a chip on your shoulder, looking for someone to rally behind a cause, and you expect a little bit of humor or derailing to happen. If you can't talk about something and see both sides of the coin (those who agree and disagree with you), then yes, the NGD will seem to be a hostile place to go. In reality, it is nothing more than a place to foster the community as friends instead of advesaries in a debate, as other forums are wont to do with thier serious nature.

actually all those topics have been brought up multiple times except the surfing one.  Honestly gamers arent in general the most physically active bunch and out of our small cross-section of the population then get it even smaller by those that post at all...  how many surfers do you think we have??

We were down at Joe's last night watching the sunset and eatng crab, and there is a surf shop right there. We contemplated trying.... but then I had to come post here and well.. I just forgot. It sucks when you strip down nekkid on the beach to put on your wetsuit and then just forget and drive home.

On a related note, saw 16 houses yesterday. 10 more today. Leaning towards Lakeside but it is sooo hot there. I really like the Mission Bay area better. Beach is closer and love the evening breeze off  the water. Gotta decide today cause tomorrow is paperwork and the drive home.

More than you think, I'm sure.

and i seriously doubt ALL of those have been brought up, but most I'm sure have been discussed in some way.

I know the Footbal one has been brought up more than a few times... cause I posted a few of them

but in all reality, I did expect a little bit of banter then total derailment or for it to be pushed to pg.3. As far as the population of gamers go, only a small part is interested in sports enough to discuss it much. Now I have seen a few of the other topics you listed before ( or similar), the Valentine's day one actually lasted a bit.

The reality of derails is that they aren't actually bad. When you go have a conversation with someone, like over lunch, it grows and develops. It isn't a "STAY ON TOPIC" business meeting. Duh. Conversations between friends grows, changes and sometimes fades away. That is life. Deal with it.

This is true, however it can become frustrating when you want to have a well thought out discussion and it derails right from the outset. I understand where the OP is coming from in this respect. In the NGD however, a few derailing comments should be expected in any post. The key is, as Goth as stated, not to take these things personally as more often than not, they aren't meant to be personal attacks.

And my overall point is.... why? Why should we "expect" topics to be derailed in NGD. No where in the topic description does it state that the forum is more relaxed, derails are regular and expected, and that it is perfectly acceptable to derail any topic in NGD because... its expected?

In all seriousness enough is enough. This bickering has gone on longer than I would have hoped. The only reason why I left this thread open was because I was hoping that the great folks in here could turn this discussion around, unfortunately it has not turned around so I'm left with no other choice but to shut down the thread.

Regards,
Joel "Raijinn Thunderguard"
